ADHD Q&A
What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a long-term condition that affects millions of children. Many people with ADHD continue to experience symptoms and difficulties with attention into adulthood. ADHD causes a combination of ongoing problems, including trouble sustaining attention, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity.
How do I know if my child has ADHD?
It’s normal for kids to struggle with things like paying attention, following directions, and sitting still. However, children with ADHD experience these problems more often and to such a degree that it disrupts activities at home, in school, or with friends.
Your child may show signs and symptoms of one or more of the following categories:
Inattention
Signs of inattention include trouble concentrating and staying on task. Your child may not listen well or follow directions, causing them to miss important details or lose track of things.
Impulsivity
Kids who are impulsive take action before thinking about the consequences. This may include interrupting others, pushing or grabbing, and having trouble waiting for their turn.
Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity causes restlessness and difficulty sitting still. Your child may climb, jump, or move about the room in situations where they should be sitting quietly.
How is ADHD diagnosed?
If you suspect your child may have ADHD, make an appointment at Cool Kidz Pediatrics. One of their experienced pediatricians gives your child a complete checkup, including a hearing and vision test, to rule out other conditions that may be causing their symptoms.
To diagnose ADHD, the pediatrician asks you to describe your child’s behavior, health, and activity. In some cases, they may refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist for additional testing.
How is ADHD treated?
After they diagnose ADHD, the team at Cool Kidz Pediatrics develops an individualized treatment plan to control your child’s particular symptoms. Treatment for ADHD typically includes behavior therapy, medications, and education services at school.
Treating ADHD usually requires a team approach. Your Cool Kidz Pediatrics provider works cooperatively with you as well as your child’s therapists and teachers to ensure they receive the most appropriate treatment.
If your child shows signs of ADHD, call Cool Kidz Pediatrics, or book an appointment online today.
