New Born Care Q & A
What is new born care?
New born care is medical care that the team at Cool Kidz Pediatrics provides for your baby right after birth, during your hospital stay, and after you return home to screen for medical problems and optimize your baby’s health.
New born care is a crucial part of keeping your baby healthy and detecting possible issues early before complications arise.
What should I expect right after delivery?
Within 24 hours after your baby is born, your provider at Cool Kidz Pediatrics does the following:
- Measures their length, weight, and head circumference
- Takes their temperature
- Observes their activity
- Measures their breathing, heart rate, and skin color
- Measures muscle tone and reflexes
- Gives them eye drops to prevent infection
- Administers vitamin K shots to prevent bleeding
- Completes newborn blood screening tests and vaccinations
- Screens for congenital heart defects
- Completes a newborn hearing test
Your pediatrician also bathes your baby and cleans the umbilical cord area, and also answers questions you may have about new born care before you leave the hospital.
What happens during new born care visits?
During your next new born care visit at Cool Kidz Pediatrics, which often occurs within 3-5 days after your baby is born, your provider examines your baby by:
- Measuring length, weight, and head circumference
- Completing a physical exam
- Observing your baby’s hearing, vision, and reflexes
- Asking questions about your baby’s activities
Your provider at Cool Kidz Pediatrics also discusses the results of your newborn’s initial screening tests. They let you know if there are any concerns about your baby’s health, if additional screening tests are necessary, and when to return for your next doctor’s visit.
How often will my new born require medical care?
After your new born’s hospital evaluation and first doctor’s visit, schedule your next appointment within the next few weeks. You may have to return to Cool Kidz Pediatrics sooner if your doctor recommends it or if you have concerns about your baby’s health or behavior.
Call the office if your baby has a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, breathing problems, weight loss, or signs of dehydration.
If your baby is healthy, well-child visits usually occur at one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, and 12 months of age the first year of life.
